Dogen Zenji, the founder of the Japanese Soto school, died here in 1253 at the age of 54. He had been staying at the residence of his lay disciple Kakunen in Takatsujinishinotoincho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, while recovering from illness. The gate has no lock, so during daylight hours visitors can enter as far as the inner area to pay respects. The site is kept clean at all times.
